"And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”" (Mark 6:31, NKJV)
This verse gives us the account of the disciples of Jesus as they return from preaching, teaching and ministering to the sick. They return to Jesus excited, telling the various accounts of their successful ministering experiences. Jesus, in turn, responds to their enthusiasm by saying in essence, "Great! Now, let's go somewhere and rest."
What Jesus teaches us here is so profound. You see, we can get so caught up in much "doing," that we forget to take time to rest our bodies, minds and emotions. Let's face it, there is always something else to do and something that needs to be done. Yet, we must also take time out for ourselves just to, as Jesus says, "rest a while."
You must take some time out just to replenish what we have given out. You cannot be as effective as you want to be in doing anything if you are always tired and drained. Be it secular jobs, working at home or ministering in the church, you must refuel and sometimes simply turn off in order to be productive at whatever you do. Do not feel guilty about it. Do not make excuses for it and do not try to explain it to people who do nothing anyway. They would never understand. Take some time out for yourself, away from all the work activity and just REST.
